MELISSA ROMAN

Coach Melissa started playing volleyball when she was 12 years old. She played libero for her high school and club teams, earning All-Conference and All-Area honors. She took her senior season off from club volleyball, to decide whether or not she wanted to continue playing into college. Melissa chose to play volleyball for Elmhurst University, a NCAA Division III school in Illinois. Melissa played as an outside hitter and a defensive specialist, and helped lead the team her senior year to a CCIW Conference Championship and a Final Four finish at the NCAA Volleyball National Championships in 2012.

Five months after her collegiate season wrapped up, Melissa tore all of the ligaments in her knee, playing in an indoor volleyball tournament. She had reconstructive knee surgery and spent 18 months rehabilitating her knee, and is now passionate about preventing injuries. She continues to play whenever she can, but has switched mostly to beach volleyball after moving to Florida.

Melissa moved from Illinois to Fort Myers, in 2014 and started coaching for Southwest Sunset Volleyball Club. She began as an assistant coach for the U18 team, and spent the next year as a head coach for the U14 team. Melissa took a step back from coaching club volleyball while she pursued a Master’s Degree in Social Work from 2017-2021. Melissa met her husband during grad school and got married right before the pandemic hit. She is now working for Hope Healthcare as a social worker. Since graduating, Melissa is excited to be back the gym doing what she loves.

Melissa’s favorite thing about coaching is watching players work hard and seeing the results of their efforts. She is excited to be joining the CCVA family!
